Two more reviews for Longhorn

18 Jun

Here’s a wonderful review from long time surf guitarist, writer Rich Hagensen. Livewire is featured in New Gandy Dancer (UK), issue 107.

Hot out of the mailbox today came the debut CD from the Urban Surf Kings lead guitarist REV HANK ‘Longhorn’ (RR004). This is an absolutely stunning long player and will soon be on everyone’s favourite list. Why? Rev Hank and his drummer Frank (den Haan) laid down these twelve instrumentals on a cold Nova Scotia weekend in February with Hank later overdubbing bass on all the tracks. I’m a sucker for Tex-Mex/Fireballs type picking and melodies and they are here in a cover of Ken Davidson’s “Twist Man Easy” and Rev Hank’s “Tipi Tone” instros. Close your eyes and you’d think “Twist & Twang” was a Los Straitjackets cut. I could go on but don’t hesitate to put out your cash for this – you’ll enjoy every tune – guaranteed!

Davy Peckett, publisher of New Gandy Dancer (UK) also reviewed Longhorn in the latest issue.

Mike Diabo from Canada’s Urban Surf Kings has this solo set of great instrumentals with a surf and sometimes rockabilly tinge. Lovely production and sound with him and the band as tight as ever. All luscious guitar twanging originals two of the best of which are the uptempo rocker “Mrs. Wong” and the contemporary Duane Eddy tribute “Twist & Twang”. ”Rex Rides Again” is great funky surf and a fine example of Mike’s writing – he composed them all (except the 2 Ken Davidson covers). Wondrous and recommended album. – 4 stars
